If you are applying for several jobs at once, don't use a generic covering letter. A good covering letter mentions and picks up specifics from the job advert, and then says what you can offer to match up against those skills. More, a really great covering letter should mimic the tone and language used in the job advert. If it uses precise jargon then you should look to use similar terms, for instance. This is known as mirroring, and if you adopt the house style of language then the HR person or whoever reads it, noting sub-consciously that it fits with the company style are more likely to put you through to the next stage.
