How To Write Up Chemistry Practicals
Education : Homework If you do chemistry practicals where you are asked to write up your results afterwards, there are several pitfalls that you need to avoid. The best way to tackle the chemistry write-up homework is to ask yourself a series of questions: - what did I do? - in what order did I do it? - what did I SEE? - what did I HEAR? - what did I SMELL? - how long did it take for any events to occur? Then, simply go through and briefly summarise what happened. Be SPECIFIC and ACCURATE. Bad but very common: "when I burnt the metal in the flame, there was a bright light for a bit" Good and what you should aim for: "When I held the strip of magnesium in the flame of the bunsen burner, after a few seconds there was a very bright white light emitted for several seconds. Afterwards there was a pile of small dark ash as the magnesium had oxidised through burning in oxygen in the air to form magnesium oxide"
