How fit is the Fittest

Doesn't the problem arise from the way that "fittest" is defined? Surely, 'Fittest' would be better expressed as "most suitably adapted to the prevailing conditions" or "most able to adapt to changing conditions". Of course, those who did survive to propagate the species would be luckier than those who didn't. The more that survived, the more offspring would be produced to ensure the continuation of the species. They certainly would be luckier but, in the sense that they were better-fitted to those changing circumstances, they would also be the fittest to survive. As I said, Darwin's problems sometimes begin with the way 'fittest' is interpreted.
