To remove rust, try rubbing the affected area with aluminium foil, of the sort you might wrap sandwiches with.
The foil often works quite effective at removing rust.

Incidentally if the rust remains you could try using a solution of an acid aimed at removing rust with care, for instance oxalic acid solution.
