How do you soften leather with household products?

The best way to soften leather is actually to buy a specific leather softening product from the hardware store or DIY centre.
They will be able to recommend the right product for you.

I bought some very stiff 3mm leather to make neckcords for my pendants. To soften it I covered the cord in cheap suntan lotion for around 30 minutes or so. now its as soft and flexable as well cooked spaghetti.
