How to stop cloudy water

I have 3 goldfish approx. 2 1/2 inches long, in a 20 gal. tank - no other fish. The water is always cloudy. I change the filter and clean the gravel weekly. Nothing seems to help. What can I do to improve the water?

Replies:

This could be caused by algae. Keep the water clear by perhaps adding some pond weed or other oxygenating weed.

Ensure the tank is not in direct sunlight.

Ensure the filter or aerator is working correctly and is aerating the water to ensure that it contains enough oxygen for the fish to breathe.
