Many sports drinks blind you with words such as isotonic and that they boost energy and so on and so forth, but what do they actually do?
Truth is many of them don't really help you to raise your performance at all.
The best thing to do is to look for drinks that specifically state that they contain electrolytes and therefore can restore electrolyte balance.
This is important because when we do sport or exercise and sweat a lot we lose electrolytes such as salt in addition to water, and therefore it is important to replace these in our bodies. Sports drinks that contain these do have an advantage over just drinking water alone, but don't just be sold on the marketing alone that they are 'sports drinks' or 'energy drinks' which by itself may mean very little!
