Foods That Can Help Prevent Breast Cancer

Health And Fitness : Food And Health

There is research being done permanently on the impact foods can have on our lives, and their ability to keep us healthy, be good or bad for us and help fight or prevent certain illnesses.

Recent research has suggested that if your diet contains the following they could help lower the chance of breast cancer.

The first is yellow orange vegetables - because they contain beta carotene which has been connected to lower breast cancer rates.

Also, vegetables known as cruciferous ones - this includes the likes of cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli. The active chemical here is indole-3-carbinol.

Tomatoes are also a great help, because they contain lycopene.

Most carotenoids, which are found in red/orange/yellow vegetables and includes beta carotene and lycopene, may protect against cancer in general (and not only breast cancer) through its anti-oxidant effects. It is particularly effective for lung cancer. However, beta carotene supplementation in smokers was shown to increase the risk of lung cancer as excessive beta-carotene results in breakdown products that reduce plasma vitamin A and worsen the lung cell proliferation induced by smoke.

Indole-3-carbinol may protect against cancer through its ability to alter oestrogen and other cellular effects but at this stage the research is inconclusive as most of it has been conducted on animals and cultured cells. Hormone balance should be tested prior to diet supplementation due to its effect on oestrogen levels. Furthermore, cruciferous vegetables can potentially be goitrogenic as they contain enzymes that interfere with the formation of thyroid hormone.

Therefore, it is important to consult your doctor before regular consumption of these foods with the intention of preventing or treating breast cancer.
