How To Fly With An Infant

Travel : Travel Tips

How to fly with an infant:

When you are flying with a toddler still in nappies, make sure you change it as close to boarding time as possible. Bring along extra nappies as well just in case the flight is delayed before boarding or when you are airborne.

Most flights offer an early boarding option for travellers with young children so you might want to consider this if your child is quite tired. If they are awake and jumpy though, you are often better to leave boarding as long as possible. A night flight is actually the best option as there is more chance they will sleep through most, if not all of it.

Take a change of clothing on board with you, as there are likely to be spillages and it will just make your child irritable if they have to sit with a wet jumper or trousers. If possible, bring some snacks that your child likes and some juice that they drink, because even if you have ordered a special children?s meals which some ? but not all ? airlines offer, they may still get hungry in-between.

Some sweets or a lollipop ? whatever you feel is safest for them to eat, are also handy for taking off and landing, as their ears will be sensitive to the changes in air pressure in the cabin.

Bringing a long little toys and books can also help distract them, or a walkman with tapes of their favourite stories to listen to. Have a supply of things for them to do and keep them busy, and try and ration them throughout the flight so that there is less chance of your infant getting bored and restless.
