Growing bulbs in Spring need not be difficult...

Growing plants from bulbs is one of the easiest ways of having lovely flowers in Spring.

The great advantage of bulbs is that they already contain much of the goodness that the plant needs to do well, so unlike tiny seeds which need to germinate and more to do well, bulbs have the energy store and a head start.

The first thing is planting time - most bulbs like daffodils and tulips should be planted in the autumn to give them time to get ready to burst up and flower wonderfully in the following Spring.

The first step is to ensure that you use good bulbs. The best ones are nice and firm, and not squashy.

You then need to dig the patch where you will plant the bulbs - if there is some light but not full sun then this is best. Dig a shallow bed for the bulbs to plant in - there is no need to go too low. Then work over the soil to loosen it up before planting the bulbs.

Plant the bulbs with the tip up, a few inches apart, to give them all space to grow. The bulbs should end up a few inches down below the soil.

Once they are all planted, simply rake over the soil smoothly over the top of the bulbs, and really that is all there is to it - the whole process only takes a few minutes.

The final step is to get the good old watering can and give them a good sprinkling of water to kick start them off.

Then all you need to do is sit back and wait - by the following year you will have a lovely set of flowers to enjoy in the Spring with their wonderful yellows, purples and reds - or other colours, depending of course on what bulbs it was that you were planting!
