Learning to serve in tennis...

When it comes to learning to play tennis one of the hardest strokes for many to master is the serve.

I believe this is because people are too ambitious and try to do everything at once. There are various elements to a good serve and therefore trying to put it all together at once is too ambitious.

The key to a good serve is learning to throw up straight and in rhythm. If the throw up is wrong it throws your body off balance and you are never going to get a good or particularly consistent service motion.

So what you should do first and foremost is learn to throw up right. Throw up straight and relatively high - some people toss too low. You will need to be able to hit the ball at the top of your arm extension so ensure that you get the right height. Practice and practice the toss before you pick up a racket.

A good drill is to put a small hoop on the ground just in front of where you throw up and practice getting the ball to drop in the hoop so you know you are doing the throw up right, when you get it right consistently then move on.

The swing should be fluid and bring the racket back so that you scratch your back, as it were, with the racket, before swinging up through with maximum extension and hitting the ball just as gravity is starting to bring it back to earth.

Get the right grip on the racket too which is the chopper grip or shaking hands, here you flick your wrist through for added speed and control on the serve and start with this rather than the forehand grip so you get used to it early on.

And those are my top tips for serving, practice and growing a bit help too, and with that anyone can have a half decent serve!
