I have built a website but am struggling to get visitors. Can you give me some tips?

Answered by: Dan Moore, web design expert

If you are struggling to get visitors to your website soon after it is created, then rest assured - this problem faces the vast majority of new websites.

Whilst there is a common perception that building the website itself is the battle, the reality is that it is promoting a site and getting a loyal following is what really takes the time and effort.

If you think about it, there are literally billions of web pages on the internet. Therefore if you want people to find your site, there needs to be some reason why they would come to visit your site.

The best way to get people interested to your site and coming back is to offer good quality, up-to-date and unique content.

Whatever you write about, write well. Keep your site updated often. Offer information that is of use to your target audience, and relevant to them. That way when people come to your site, it will not be a one off visit but they will come back time and time again. And they may even recommend you to friends and family.

Also be sure to submit your website to the major search engines which you can do for free. Consider exchanging links with relevant sites, for instance others in your field and quality link directories.

Ensure that your website is accessible to search engines; avoid the use of technologies like Flash and JavaScript for navigation and key content as this is much harder or impossible to spider.

Also ensure that you name your pages sensibly and use relevant title and heading tags on your pages.

If you are prepared to pay for traffic, there are excellent programs like Google AdWords that you can use to drive targetted traffic to your site.

The bottom line is that getting visitors to your site takes time and continual effort, but if you are prepared to put that in, you can be pleasantly rewarded.
