I want to teach English abroad. Do I really need a teaching certificate?

Answered by: Emma Bird, moving abroad expert

It depends on the country you are planning to teach in. In Europe, the CELTA (from the University of Cambridge) is the most widely accepted level-entry certificate and many schools will not hire you unless you have completed this one-month intensive course. In other countries, such as Japan, a teaching certificate isn’t necessary. www.tefl.com is one of the largest portals for TEFL jobs.
