Cucumbers & green peppers

I started this year growing vegatables in containers (I use containers not through choice, but through necessity. I am getting a harvest of cucumbers and green peppers, but about 1/3 to 1/2 to them are mis-shaped. The peppers are the right size, but look like they are make of clay and someone twisted them (still seem good to eat tho). Some cucumbers are much smaller than the rest and are all kinds of odd shapes. We have been eating both and they all taste fine. I would like to know what causes this and what I can do in the future to avoid this.

Thanks
