Detectable radioactivity

On a recent History Channel program Ancient Aliens the author noted in India ancient past that humanoid beings in airal vehicles conducting a war. During this war by discription nuclar devices may have been used.
The question is as with deposites from metors stiking the earth, valcanos depositing ash creating a detectable layer. Would such a device leave trace amount that could be detectsble. Thanks.
