Personally i believe we are. But I'm curious to see what others think.
What do you think famous philosophers would say the motives are for helping Haiti in their time of crisis?
Why do you believe we are obligated to help them? From a philosophical point of view.

You can argue the toss on this one either way. Firstly, does the knowledge of problems in other countries obligate richer countries to do something about it?

Well, in one sense clearly not - because many thousands of people are dying through malnutrition and disease in Africa every day of the year yet relatively very little is done to help those people and their plight by richer countries.

Since there is no such thing as absolute moral standards it is up to the people in each country to decide what to do: and since most countries are representative democracies this means it is up to politicians to decide how much money to give to needy causes.

No country is obligated to help any other.

It is a matter of choice for the residents of the country which is practice means the government as to what to do and how much aid to decide to give or not to give.
