I think you might be thinking of something like the poles such as the North pole and the South pole?

At those you have a period of full light and then a period of full darkness for months on end.

It is to do with where the sun is and where the poles are and how the earth spins around the sun.

This means that the top and bottom of the globe have long periods of time where they are either in full sunlight which means it is permament day and then permanent darkness.

If you look at some websites that have pictures of the earth rotating around the sun and the light and dark patches then it is much easier to see what happens as it is hard for me at least to describe it in words!!
