What is the difference between bits and bytes?

A common question at GCSE computing will be about bits and bytes, and the difference with regard the two.

It is sad that many do not know and use bits and bytes interchangeably when infact they refer to very different things.

A bit is simply a '1' or a '0' and nothing more than that.

A byte however is much larger and is a sequence of bits, which are the more basic entity, and usually eight bits; hence there are eight bits to one byte.

Clearly due to this 8x size difference there is a large difference between talking about bits and bytes when it comes to memory, storage capacity and so on.
