Keyword Puzzles: Tips On Solving

Games : Codes And Ciphers

Keyword puzzles are known under various names such as codewords, codecracker and so on.

They are essentially a puzzle that contains each letter substituted for a number and you have to crack the code. Normally this is through a crossword grid of proper words in english which you must use to solve the code.

The best tip is to count up the most commonly occurring letters; these are normally 'e' 't' and 'a' or at least two of those three.

You can find out which is the 'a' and the 'e' by how well they bind to other letters. The one that is the 'e' you should expect to find up against most other letters, whilst the 't' should be a little more picky and bind to less consonants than the vowel.

Look for some common double letters too as this again reduces quite a few of the consonants it can be and also 'uu' and 'ii' are 'aa' are very unlikely for this too.

There are lots of patterns you can spot such as words ending in 's' often being quite common.

As you do more of the puzzles you soon get tells and spot patterns that are repeated in each puzzle and these can help you solve a puzzle in no time.

When you get a foothold in the puzzle you can normally guess the rest of the code as there are only a couple of words that fit each crossover. Just work out if this would create any obvious falsities and if not then place and work through.
