Like all areas of life, there are those who get more from online networking than others. Some will sign up and plod along with a few nice conversations and contacts for years. Others will sign up on day one and a week later they will have a hundred contacts.
Neither approach is necessarily worse or better, as it is how you engage and talk to others that will govern your success.
Take a real interest in their wants and needs and delay on the sales front for five minutes and you are sure to do better than sending everyone you come across a blanket pitch for their business.
More than perhaps other forms of business contact, online networking is about building some sort of rapport first and in this way is very much a slow burner - it is unlikely to lead directly to tonnes of business, but it should start to gradually offer up some leads for you to pursue.
