How To Understand Dress Codes

Beauty : Clothes And Fashion

Deciphering dress codes on invitations can be difficult as nobody wants to make a faux pas by appearing over or under dressed.

Black tie generallly means tuxedos for men and long or cocktail dresses for women. White tie is the most formal and this means the man must wear a white shirt, vest and cummerbund while women should wear a long dress.

If you are told "black tie optional" then men can wear a tuxedo or otherwise a dark suit, as the occasion is still formal. If you are female, you can wear a long dress, a cocktail dress or an evening suit in separate parts. However, one of the most difficult codes is "semi formal". The best way to work this one out is to look at what time the event takes place. If it is in the evening then a dark suit for a man and a cocktail dress for a woman will suffice, but if it is during the day then the woman can wear a short dress or smart suit, while a man should wear an ordinary suit, not necessarily dark though.

Cocktail attire is quite simple, similar to black tie optional as a man should wear a dark suit and the woman doesn't need to wear a long dress, but the short one should still be elegant evening wear.

There are different forms of causal. Dressy casual really equates to business casual and doesn't include jeans or shorts, whereas casual normally encompasses everything. However, the setting does play a part, so if you are at a wedding reception and the dress code is casual or informal you should still dress appropriately for the formality of the event and not turn up in a pair of combats. Smart trousers and a shirt for a man is sufficient, while a woman can wear smart trousers, a suit or a skirt ensemble.
