Why Altruism Does Not Make Sense

Philosophy : Philosophy Articles

First, let's define the concept:

"the view that the well-being of others should have as much importance for us as the well-being of ourselves. "

Whilst this seems like a very desirable concept, it is not actually coherent. Why?

Well, it seems that all action must be based on egoism - the desire to promote our own desires and wishes and well-being.

Let's imagine I decide to donate my last dollar to charity to help others. That's altruism right? Well, not really - you get that warm glow for doing it, and that must be more valuable to you than giving away one dollar, hence it is really an egoistic reason that motivates you.
