How to achieve world peace

There is an old joke that says everyone who enters a beauty contest always has to say that they want world peace without really knowing what that means let alone of course how to go about achieving it.

My question is this: whilst it is a great thing to want, of course it is, is it even possible to achieve world peace or is this just a pipedream that will never happen because humans are naturally competitive and agressive?
