Learning a new piece of music quickly

The biggest thing I have learnt (and I'm not a very good player yet at all!) is simply to practice the bits you find hardest.

Naturally we practice the bits that we find easiest and play those the most and get them really good, and gloss over the bits of the piece we find tricky and don't enjoy.

But actually the way to get good is to practice the bits that you find hard - either because of the rhythm, the notes, the spread of the chord, whatever the reason - those are the bits to practice to get good quickly!

I'm sure that's the best way of learning, but it's also probably the hardest to get into.

I haven't played for years, but when I did I always skipped over the hard bits and played the bits I found easier, I guess that's why I was never very good
