Why people have stupid beliefs

The world is in an interesting place right now. The more that science progresses, ironically the more non-scientific and gullible other people are.

So people are starting to believe in superstitious stuff like horoscopes and crystal healing and all other sorts of stupid beliefs. The problem is if you are going to believe in those sorts of things, then you show a worrying inability to perform basic human feats of discrimination such as determining cause from effect. It is frankly worrying that in this day and age where we have so much to owe science and know so much about our world and cause and effect that these beliefs persist.
