| Education : How To Excel In Exams Part III We have just mentioned that as a rule you should show working. There is one exam where it is a must - any to do with maths or a mathematical calculation. Why? Because if the question has several marks, and all you write is the wrong answer, you get 0. However, you can get the wrong answer but get virtually all the marks if you show the working: if the working contains 5 steps and you get the first 4 steps right, you will still get the marks for those steps even if you get the wrong answer. But the examiner can only give you the marks for that working if you have written it down!
