Baby Massage Techniques

Health And Fitness : Baby

BABIES ARE PRECIOUS

Health experts explain how to soothe fussy, colicky babies with massages.

Slowly and gently pumping the legs can ease a colicky baby.
Repeat this motion of pumping the legs toward the chest, holding then lowering the legs down again.

This method of touch therapy can help a baby the natural way.

The best time for a baby massage is after a bath. The baby is comfortable, happy and in his or her environment.

Prepare a soft massage surface. A pillow covered by a blanket works great.

Warm the massage oil by rubbing hands together before applying.

Relaxing with baby is a great time for a foot massage. Use gentle acupressure, pressing softly on different parts of the baby's foot.

Also try a hand massage on baby, using the same soft acupressure on each hand.
This is a chance to teach various parts of the body as well.

A brief massage can lend to a longer, more restful nap for baby.
Keep the massage low-key. A vigorous massage could get him or her worked up.

Follow baby's cues during the massage. If the baby seems uncomfortable, change the technique, and if the baby is enjoying the massage, this can identify what works.

Avoid any cut or bruised area on baby. Also, avoid massaging the baby if he or she is running a fever, as this could increase body temperature.

Remember, a massage at any point increases bonding between the parent and child. Once the baby learns to speak, he or she can thank you!
