How To Evaluate Staff Performance

Business : Running Your Business

One thing that you may need to get used to when running your own business is working with others, and specifically evaluating their performance and seeing how they need to develop to help themselves and your company.

Remember that you should be sure to set good standards, but not unrealistically high.

Do not expect perfection of others, as if you do then they will never meet your expectations and won't enjoy working for you and you won't appreciate what they are doing.

Evaluating performance of others is one area where using gut instinct can be a useful indicator, so do listen to what your gut feeling is telling you about someone to help evaluate them.

However don't rely on that alone. Try to have a target plan in place for each employee as this gives you something concrete and business based to evaluate their performance against, rather than just gut instinct. It also means they know what they need to achieve and helps give them the focus that they need.
