Exam Technique: Multiple Choice

Education : Exams And Revision

Many people's eyes light up when they hear that a particular paper will be multiple choice. However don't be lulled into a false sense of security - multiple choice can be very tricky.

If you've ever seen Who Wants to be a Millionaire, you will know that multiple choice doesn't help when you don't know the answer! And when you do know the answer, you don't usually need multiple choice.

However, there is an exception to this, and that's where the specific technique with multiple choice comes in.

Sometimes, you will know either what the answer is NOT, and therefore can eliminate choices, or you will know the ROUGH answer - for instance with maths you might know the answer is between 5 and 6, and this may help you eliminate other answers.

The best method is to go through and give all the answers you are certain of first, as there is often heavy time pressure with multiple choice, then go back through again and do your best guesses.

Be educated in your answers - if there are three similar answers and one completely different then on most occasions you can eliminate the one that is completely different!

Also never, ever leave a multiple choice answer blank - it is amazing how many people do this! It's stupid! With four choices per answer for instance there is a 25% chance of getting it right.

Therefore if there are four questions you are uncertain of then on average you will gain a mark just randomly. And if you're ultra lucky you might get three or even four, the difference between a grade maybe!
