There will always be occasions where you need a suit and a nice dark suit is the safest to go for as it will complement any skin colour and hair and eye colour combination. Wearing an expensive suit is not a must, but it should be well fitting. A suit with a poor fit across the shoulders can look quite offputting - but a well tailored and fitting suit can make you look good and feel good too. Also ensure that you have some dark dress slacks in your wardrobe to call on - another must have item. A good selection of ties is important too. Have some standard plain colour ones but also something more colourful for the right occasion. Be sure to have a couple of well fitting sweaters - these can look really good and flattering too. They are ideal for casual occasions or a less formal first date.
