The best way to deal with performance is to come up mutually with a performance contract at the start of each year - this outlines what the member of staff will be expected to do that year. Monitor how they perform against the contract throughout the year, you may wish to call it a performance plan to soften things. Key: get the staff member to buy into the concept of performance development - it is for them as well as you. Having something tangible to work from enables you to pick up examples of poor performance and have something to back up your opinions - e.g. an objective they did not meet.
