How To Remove Unwanted Hair

Beauty : Haircare

Here are the most common methods used to remove hair from the legs, arms, underarms, face, eyebrows and bikini line:

Shaving Technique

1. Shaving - this is the most common method, probably because it is non-time consuming. You can shave the hair on your legs and underarms, but avoid shaving the arms, bikini line or face. Never shave dry skin - when the hair is wet, it is much more pliable, therefore always use a special shaving gel or lotion, and ensure your razor is sharp. It is recommended to invest in a good quality razor designed especially for women and change the blade regularly, or if you use disposable razors, make sure you do not use them when they become blunt. On legs, shave against the area of growth, although take care not to go over the same area repeatedly, as this can cause hairs to become ingrown. The effects of shaving do not last long and may need to be repeated on a daily basis.

Depilatory Creams

2. Depilatory creams - these are creams which contain a special ingredient which dissolves the hair beneath the pore as well as the hair which you see on the surface. This means it has a longer lasting effect than shaving, and so the process might only need to be repeated once or twice a week. However, it is a rather messy and awkward process, as the cream is applied to the area of skin you wish to remove hair from, left for a certain amount of time and then rinsed off. It is vital that you follow the instructions on the packet carefully and do not leave the cream on for longer than recommended. The advantage to depilatory creams is that they often result in smoother skin, as they may often contain a moisturising ingredient. There are different creams available for different parts of the body, and so take care to buy the appropriate kind, whether it be for legs or the bikini line.

Waxing Technique

3. Waxing - this can be done by a beautician or at home with a special home waxing kit, however you must take care to read the instructions and follow them directly. Waxing pulls the hair out at the root, therefore it is the method with the most long lasting effects. Unfortunately it is also one of the most painful. It is used on the legs, underarms, bikini line and eyebrows. There are different forms of wax:

How to wax

"Hot" wax, which is heated up then applied to the skin in the direction of hair growth. A special cotton strip is placed over it, and as it cools and hardens, the hair becomes trapped within the wax. The cotton strip is then pulled quickly off in the opposite direction of hair growth, and takes the hairs with it.

How to cold wax

"Cold" waxing involves using strips already coated with wax. Again they are pressed onto the skin in the direction of hair growth, and then pulled off in the opposite direction. These strips come in different sizes for different areas of the body.

What is Sugaring?

"Sugaring" is similar to waxing. A sugar mix is applied to the skin and then removed again with the special strips of cloth. These "sugar" mixes can be easily washed off the skin later should any remnants still be there.

On the one hand, waxing is probably the most painful option, but it also provides the most long lasting results, of 3-8 weeks. However, in order to be effective, the hair must be at least 1/8 inch long prior to treatment.

Bleaching unwanted hair

4. Bleaching - this does not remove hairs, but makes them lighter on areas where they are thin and not very noticeable, such as the face and arms. You must always follow the instructions rigorously and ensure that the bleach is not left on your skin any longer than recommended by manufacturers.

More hair removal advice

PHD Waxing is another form of waxing although rather that a wax pot it the wax is held in tubes. Disposable applicators are used for each client when done in a salon. Easy to apply.

I've just read your article but is there any way you can make your own wax as I find buying homekits and salons are too expensive.

I figured out a easy way to shave your legs its called "veet moose".

There is a great new way to remove unwanted hair. electrolosis! i have benn usin gmy own home kit with gel and pads ect for my arms. so far i am not sure of the full effects as it takes a couple of months of use to fully remove hair perminantly. however i have noticed tht over treatments less hair has come back. you can bye electrolosis kits at boots or any other chemist..

You can make wax by heating over low to medium heat for ten minutes. you mix 1 full cup of regular sugar, half teaspoon lemon doozi (can be found in middle eastern food store)and a little less than 1/4 cup of tap water. mix well and let cook for ten minutes. THe taste of the mixture shouldn't be too sweet and not too sour. To know when its ready , put a tad between your thumb and fore finger, see how sticky it is and look for a gum like texture. let the mixture cool down and make sure its too not hot to the touch before waxing. you can use an old sheet for waxing strips. for this wax, you apply the wax to the strip and then put it on wherever you wax..

The best way wuld be using creams... brands like VEET... they come in really useful and after shaving off, the skin looks smooth and silky!!! JUSt the way i wanted it to look like!! Affordable too... .
