How To Run A Meeting Without Distraction
Career : Career Techniques When running a meeting, there can be many things to overcome. One unknown is your colleagues - will they input to the meeting a lot, or a little? Worst of all is when the other members bring their own agenda to a meeting, and try to hijack it. You can have great discussions, but completely off topic for the meeting. One of your main responsibilities as the leader of the meeting is to keep people focussed on the agenda. One way to do this without disquiet is to put a piece of flipchart paper up at the start of the meeting, and call it the parking lot. Then, when people make a valid point but off topic, say you are going to 'park it' for future discussion, and list on the flipchart. That way you stay on the agenda, but still have a record of valuable points. At the end of the meeting you can briefly discuss the items on the parking lot, and decide how best to deal with them - everyone will be satisfied with a relevant meeting that stayed on topic, but without losing interesting ideas.
