How To Scan : Bit Depth
Computing : Hardware We've seen that the key stat to look at with a scanner is the resolution. Another key figure with a scanner is the bit depth. This measures how much information about each colour can be collected by the scanner. Standardly today a scanner would be 24 bit - and can capture around 16 million colours. The best quality ones are around 36 bit, however there is no need for these for all but professional standards, and even then a lot of software cannt cope with this much detail.
