As well as generic stuff like a good quality, in focus and well lit picture, there might be more specifics. For instance, if it's a book, then a picture of one page of black and white text won't help. Much better to have the front cover, or back cover, particularly if it has a nice illustration or is hard back. In other words, present the item in its best light. Then, secondly "how are others displaying this item" - check out other listings or other sites that are selling your item. See how they have photographed it. If you find something you like, then consider composing a similar picture yourself.
