The Basics Of Search Engine Optimisation

Computing : Search Engine Optimisation

Many people think search engine optimisation is mysterious and hard to do. Now, there are many things you can do to help improve the ranking of a website.

But most things that can be done, and those that have the most impact, are simple to do, simple to understand and above all make sense.

Consider a book. If you want to find the pages that contain information on the Romans in a history book, you look at the index, which tells you the pages containing that word.

And to a degree that's all search engines do - find pages containing the word Romans and then rank them for the most relevant down for that keyword. Now to be ranked for the search Romans you had better have that word on your page.

And so with your website - the key is to ensure that the content and vocab on the page reflects those search terms that you would like to reach your site.

Therefore use your title tag, h1 and meta description to reinforce what your page is about, and ensure that your page is focused on the key topic it discusses and uses wording that is consistent with that topic.

If you do that, then you have the basics of search engine optimisation sorted and are on the right track.
