| Hobbies : Art What are the characteristics of art in this period? Well, the period began in the 15th century. It is characterised by the striving to be as realistic as possible; to try to represent reality and the world around us as accurately as possible, almost to fool into thinking one is looking at something real and not a piece of art. A big technical achievement of the time was the discovery of linear perspective, which allowed this sort of painting to be possible. The key idea here is to apply these laws to convey the illusion of a 3D object on what is of course only 2D - the surface of the painting or canvas.
