How To Understand Team Building

Business : Running Your Business

There is no doubt - by fostering a team atmosphere at work and everybody mucking in together you can really improve results, as it is staff that get results, and motivated staff get better results.

Here are the four classic steps of team formation that you'll need to understand if employing staff in your business:

1 - Forming

Occurs when a team first comes together and when a new member joins. Members determine where they fit into the group. At this stage, you should create friendly, relaxed environment, and clarify what the team is, why it is together, what it has to achieve. Clarify roles.

2 - Storming

Here the group look for and establish who the leader is. They may also start to see some tension or even conflict in the group. You need to look out for, anticipate, and resolve any conflict that arises early between staff.

3 - Norming

The team identity starts to take on a steady state as members grow comfortable. Here the team know what they can and can't do and how to react with other members, and have formed opinions of which other team members they like, don't like, trust, don't trust etc.,

At this stage you need to ensure that the team is focussed on achieving its goals (i.e. the smooth running of your business and any specific targets that you have set)

4 - Performing

Here the team values the differences between its members and performs highly. Characteristic here is that the members trust each other, enjoy working together and are committed to the team.

Here as team leader you need to do very little and leave the team in a state of equilibrium with the occasional input as necessary.
