How To Use Henna

Beauty : Clothes And Fashion

Henna powder comes from a plant and is made into a paste which you can apply to the skin to make body art designs. Henna is often mistaken for being a kind of tatoo, but it is not because it is not permanent. It only dyes the outer layer of your skin whereas a tattoo is done with a needle and forces the ink deeper into your skin.

Henna is said to be very safe as it is natural, however you should always do a patch test before using it. It will remain on your skin until the layer of skin exfoliates itself, so the thicker the skin, the longer it will last, but if it is on delicate skin it may only last a few days. The thicker the skin the darker the henna will appear when it is dry.

Once you have made the henna paste, you draw a pattern onto your skin with it. You can buy a special tool to do this with, along with lots of stencils when you buy the henna kit to make the paste. You should always practice drawing with henna first before doing it on your skin, even just onto a paper towel so that you get the feel of it, particularly if you are not using a stencil.

Always make sure your skin is clean and dry before applying the henna. Remove all lotions and dirt and it is best not to use henna on skin that is broken or sunburned.

Remember that henna will begin to stain the skin within the first minute of application so if you make a mistake on your skin, scrape it off or wash it off right away. When you are finished, you have to let the henna dry onto your skin for at least 6 hours, and not let the pattern get smudged. If you are unable to sit in a hot room for all this time, then there are sprays that you can buy that seal the pattern and then you cover it up. Always make sure you follow the procedure properly, ask for advice when you buy the henna if there is no instruction guide, or find a book that will give you more detailed instructions.

For a richer colour when the henna/mehndi dries on your hands, apply lemon and sugar onto it. Keep it on overnight if possible and rub your hands together to get it off. Then rinse your hands with water.
