How To Use The Periodic Table

To use the periodic table is really quite simple. Vertical columns are periods, and horizontal parts are rows. There is various information contained in the periodic table about each element: in the top left, the proton number of the element, and at the bottom the atomic mass of the element: protons and neutrons. In between is the symbol for the element.



Within each period, there is much resemblance. This is because these elements share the same number of electrons in the outer shell of the atom. So, for instance, period 1, containing the likes of lithium, potassium and caesium is one of soft, shiny reactive metals - caesium dropped in water will explode, so handle with care!
