Where did the hamster go?

My 8 year old's 3 month Hamster escaped on Thursday night. We quickly established that it was under the floor boards although we do not know how he got there. We tried to get him from underneath (the garage) and saw his nose poking out of a hole in the ceiling. Sadly we didn't manage this and haven't heard anything since. We have left a small floorboard up and made the hole in the garage roof bigger. We put a plastic box underneath the hole to catch him if he came back. we have left cheese and peanut butter on a cracker by the floorboard as well as his normal food. It has been 6 days now and I am starting to lose hope. Has anyone got any advice???
