i have been offered a contract but have no porfolio and have been told i need 8 initial shoots to show any interested clients. i can have this done by the agency for £350 (usually £700) or get it done by another photographer - should the agency be charging me and is this a usual amount to be paying or should i be cautious?

Charlotte - unfortunately this is DEFINITELY a scam - do not part with your money!

Anyone who tries to get you to part with money is not going to be finding you work. All proper agencies do not charge for you to be on their books - because they are confident that you will get work and instead take commission.

If you part with cash to an agency, you are extremely unlikely to get any work on the back of it. If an agency don't charge you, they have a big incentive to get you work - because this then gets them money. If they already have your £350, the easiest thing for them rather than promote you is then find the next person willing to part with their hard-earned cash in pursuit of the dream..

Model agencies that get you work won't charge you up front because they are confident of getting you work.

Those that charge money up front are less likely to get you work as they already have got money from you!
