Stomach exercises that are kind to the back

If there is something preventing you from doing standard stomach exercises as you mention, then the best thing to do would be to consult an expert who can give you exercises that will take into account your restrictions.
For instance see a personal trainer or even a gym instructor for an hour or so and get an exercise program devised that is unique to you.
