To make sure that you achieve your goals, you should take the time to write yourself a contract. It may sound silly, but it is really effective - you can't renege on your job since you have a contract making you do things like get up early every morning! Similarly, with a self contract to achieve certain goals you are much more likely to have the requisite discipline to achieve them. Of course, schedule in rewards as well and you are likely to have great success.
