How To Be Assertive

Career : Career Techniques

Being assertive takes practice, how often do you wish after an event that you had said something else? Here are some tips:

Assertiveness: Tips and Technique

(1) Say 'no' with a smile. You don't need a long excuse. Just be polite and you will sound credible

(2) Don't use self-deprecating language. Never say 'i'm not very good at this, but...' drop these completely.

(3) never start a conversation with an apology. It can make you sound nervous. Use 'excuse me...' instead. Or just omit it altogether.

(4) Don't use approval-seeking language. 'Can I', 'may I'... Here you are intimating that your request is oflow priority or importance by suggesting that permission is in some way required for you to do something

(5) Be prepared to state your beliefs. Use 'I' statements. 'I'd like to hear that again'. Adding non-verbal gestures such as a smile can reinforce this approach.

Assertiveness: Bottom Line

If you act in a manner as though you are in control and confident of yourself and your views, then you will come across as assertive. We judge others by their behaviour and actions, therefore to be seen as assertive, act assertive.
