There are many things that you can do to develop your career. Here we look at a couple of things that you should ensure you possess in your skillset to develop your career:

The first thing to note is that, whilst to get your first break in business, being a good speaker and getting attention is often important, you need to be a really good listener to progress.

Not only that you need to know when to speak and when to listen, and you need to be able to drill down to the key points in what is being said at speed. That is you need to be able to prioritise from some oral information on a very quick and regular basis.

If you find it hard to concentrate for a long time on what people are saying, then you really need to practice.

Set yourself a target in meetings and presentations not to lose focus once for ten minutes - you will find how hard it is - but in the process you will learn a lot more from presentations and your performance will go up in meetings.

So, concentration and listening skills are key. Yet many people do not work on developing these areas whereas they will happily work on other skills.

Make sure that this description does not fit you, as an excellent listener AND speaker is well equipped to succeed in any organisation in the modern world.
