Why? Because more likely than not in order to establish relationships abroad the company will need someone to go over and visit suitable locations, companies and so forth in the country - if you can speak the language then you may get the job, but more than that it shows that you have a skill that is a real asset. Particularly in English speaking countries we tend to get complacent about speaking languages (ever heard someone say 'I don't speak Foreign' as though it were a language itself!)
