Mortgage Terms Explained: Principal

Money : Mortgages

In mortgage terminology, the term 'principal' refers to the total amount of debt left on a loan.

Note that very importantly this term does not include the interest - interest is excluded in the calculation of the principal. This is an important point to note as the principal is therefore lower than you might otherwise expect!
