Therefore it is very rare that it should be longer than a page, unless specifically requested. Usually companies are looking for your ability to summarise the key points of your application briefly and concisely, a useful skill indeed. Hence the text should not be more than 2/3 of a page, and hence with the signature and address at the top, the letter will fill one side of A4.
