Then on arrival mention that you are a frequent guest of that hotel or that chain, and therefore you would be interested in a courtesy upgrade. The fact is that if the hotel is not full that night and there are rooms going spare, they may well consider your request. As the room is already prepared then the cost for them will be little and there is customer loyalty and feel good factor at stake. And the worst that can happen is that they say that they cannot upgrade the quality of your room and you haven't lost anything. Therefore sometimes you just have to ask these questions to find out the answer!
